There is a version of Mainz that only exists before nine.
The shutters are still half down. Delivery vans make more noise than people. A café that has just unlocked is not yet a meeting place. It is a room with a window and a little too much quiet.
That is the point of going.
The first cup does not need company
Later in the day, coffee is social. You wait for someone. You take a table that can grow.
Early, it can be smaller than that. One seat by the glass. Steam. The street doing almost nothing.
Mainz is often praised for how easily it fills: markets, squares, the river on a Saturday. The unused hour is part of the same gift. A compact city still has corners that have not started.
Ritual is just a decision you stop renegotiating
You do not need a favourite café with a name you tell visitors. You need a time of day that does not ask you to be interesting.
Walk there. Order the same thing. Look at the pavement until it has people on it.
A morning becomes yours when you no longer have to invent it.
Then the city arrives, as it always does
Someone opens a laptop. A pram goes past. The first market stall, a few streets over, starts stacking crates.
You can stay. You can leave. Either way, you have already been in Mainz before Mainz was fully on.
That is a useful way to begin.
